Canada beats South Africa to reach last 16 of World Cup
Canada defeated South Africa to advance to the last 16 of the World Cup, with Stéphane Eustaquio scoring the decisive goal.
Stéphane Eustaquio scored a wonder goal in the second minute of injury time to give co-hosts Canada a 1–0 win against South Africa. This victory marks the first time for Canada to reach the last 16 of the World Cup. Canada created many chances in this match, but Eustaquio's goal proved to be decisive.
In the match, Canada played aggressively from the beginning, but the South African team also showed strength in defense. Canada got some chances in the first half, but could not score. Late in the game, with the possibility of extra time looming, Eustaquio fired a brilliant strike from the edge of the penalty area that beat the South African goalkeeper.
With the win, Canada had already defeated Qatar 6–0 in their group, solidifying their position. Now they will face either Netherlands or Morocco in the next stage. Coach Jesse Marsh told the players after the match that they would be known as "Canadian heroes", and that their contributions were important to the future of the game.
South Africa had a disappointing performance in the match, finishing second in Group A, with only one shot on target. At the end of the match, Canada played all three Group B matches at home, but had to play the United States after a 2–1 loss against Switzerland.
A big positive sign for Canada is the return of Alphonso Davies, who was injured in the Champions League. Davis proved his quality as soon as he came on the field. In this way, Canada gifted a historic victory to its fans.
