Mikel Arteta has expressed his disappointment at his side's shock EFL Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town. Arsenal, last year's finalists, suffered a stunning upset against fourth-tier side Fleetwood in this competition on Tuesday. Fleetwood won 5–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw at Highbury Stadium.

Fleetwood's first goal was scored by Aaron Lupalo-Baie in the 21st minute, while Victor Gyökeres equalized for Arsenal with a neat goal early in the second half. However, Fleetwood held out strongly to take the match to a penalty shootout. Meanwhile, Max Dowman saw a red card for Arsenal in the last minute, and Arteta's team's low point of the night was when Conor Hage successfully converted the winning penalty, while Bruno Guimarães was stopped by the brilliant JD Lynch.

Arteta, however, said his team were not lacking in desire to win. He told Sky Sports, "First of all, I want to congratulate Fleetwood on their win. It's a very sad day for us. I can't blame the mentality of the players; I didn't see anybody not meeting the requirements at this level. We had the ball, a lot of chances, and we should have capitalized on them, but we didn't."

Arsenal took 26 shots in the match, 7 of which were on goal, and created chances with an expected goals number of 2.21. Kai Havertz missed several golden chances, while Ben White also had a late effort brilliantly saved by Lynch. Fleetwood, on the other hand, only scored three tries, with an overall expected goals of 0.26.

Fleetwood coach Matt LaRue said, "We're not stupid or cocky enough to think we can beat the best team in the country. We knew we had to down our luck, and keep them from giving us space and options. I thought we did that well for most of the game." Now, Fleetwood await the quarter-finals after defeating a Premier League opponent for the first time in their history.

What will happen next

Arsenal will now need to improve their tactics as they look to bounce back in the next matches. Mikel Arteta will have to focus on reinvigorating the players' mentality and performances. This victory of Fleetwood Town will boost the confidence of their team, due to which Arsenal may have to face more difficulties in the upcoming matches.
