Portugal – Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the captain of the Portuguese national team, recently skipped the national team training camp for no apparent reason. This action is considered to be a violation of the disciplinary rules of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). Ronaldo announced on September 30 that he was withdrawing from the team, but promised to explain the reasons. The move has drawn mixed reactions from his fans and the media. His decision may cause loss to the team, especially when Portugal has to play matches against Denmark and Norway in the Nations League.

According to Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola, Ronaldo, the national team's all-time leading scorer, could face disciplinary proceedings. According to the disciplinary rules of the FPF, if a player is absent from the team or skips training without a justified reason, he can be suspended for 1 to 6 months. In addition, professional players may also have to pay a fine of 500 to 1,000 euros.

The controversy began when Jorge Jesus, the new coach who helped Ronaldo win the Saudi Pro League with Al Nassr last season, called him up for four group matches in the Nations League. According to the conversation between Jesus and Ronaldo, Ronaldo was to play in the first match against Wales. In the match on 24 September, Ronaldo started the game, but was subbed off in the second half. The plan was to play Ronaldo for the last 30 minutes in the match against Norway on 27 September, but Jesus changed tactics and did not give Ronaldo a chance to play. Due to this, Ronaldo remained sitting on the bench completely.

When the team resumed practice on Sunday, Ronaldo was absent and was seen alone in a café in the camp. Jesus later said that Ronaldo's move was "a momentary disappointment". However, this behavior of Ronaldo further increased his displeasure. He announced the end of his time with the team.

However, it is unclear whether Ronaldo has finished his international career. He had earlier said that the 2026 World Cup would be the last tournament of his career, but he has not made any official announcement about leaving the Portuguese team. Ronaldo has played 234 matches at international level and scored 146 goals. He helped Portugal win the Euro Cup in 2016, but since then he has faced several disappointments. Currently, Portugal have scored two wins against Wales and Norway and are on top of Group 4 of the Nations League A. If they beat Denmark and Norway in the further matches, they can soon reach the quarter-finals.

What will happen next

Ronaldo could face disciplinary proceedings, including a suspension of 1 to 6 months. If he is suspended, Portugal will have to worry about their chances in the Nations League. Ronaldo has promised to provide clarification in the future, which will clarify his position and the direction of the team.
