Abelardo Fernandez, a former Barcelona player, has used his expertise to express concerns over the state of the team's defence. He believes Barcelona need a top-class centre-back to succeed in the Champions League. His comments could be crucial towards the team's future performance and competition in the Champions League.

Why it matters

Abelardo Fernandez's concerns are vital to Barcelona's Champions League success. In his opinion, the lack of a reliable centre-back could affect the team's chances, especially when they are competing against Europe's top clubs. Barcelona have struggled to maintain consistency in the Champions League in recent years, and this problem could become a big issue for them.

Barcelona have made a great start to the season under Hansi Flick, winning their first 10 competitive matches. However, former player Abelardo Fernandez believes that the team needs a key player to compete with more confidence in the Champions League.

Speaking on Onda Cero's Radiostadio programme, the former Spain international praised Barcelona's form, while questioning whether their current defensive options are strong enough to meet the demands of Europe's biggest competition. Abelardo believes Barcelona need a reliable, top-class centre-back if they want to consistently challenge against Europe's strongest teams.

He said, "I hope I'm wrong, but to win the Champions League I think FC Barcelona lacks something in defense – a reliable centre-back." The former Barcelona player detailed his concerns, arguing that the team still lacks the defensive quality they need to compete against the continent's best.

Barcelona have not kept a clean sheet in Europe since 2025. Abelardo also pointed out that success in the Champions League often depends on how the team handles decisive one-on-one encounters, especially against top attackers.

“Ultimately, he will have to overcome the challenges of defense against players like Khvitcha Kvaratskheliya or Harry Kane,” he said. This point is particularly relevant to Barcelona's high defensive line, which allows Flick's team to press offensively but can leave space behind the centre-backs.

Against attackers who can take advantage of those gaps, defensive positioning and individual combat can be extremely important. Barcelona's strong start to the season has shown their attacking potential, but the former player believes their ability to handle these situations will determine whether they can convert early-season momentum into a European trophy.

Despite concerns about their defence, Abelardo praised Barcelona's attacking quality, particularly citing Lamin Yamal as a player who could take the team to the next level. "If Lamin Yamal plays at that level, it will be impossible to stop Barça," he said. The former player also gave a glowing overall review of Flick's team after the start of this season. "I think they are in incredible form. They are the best team in Europe," he concluded.

What will happen next

If Barcelona decide to strengthen their defence, they could potentially try to bring in a new player. The move could help them perform better in the Champions League, especially in the knockout stages. Abelardo's comments highlight that the team needs to address their weaknesses so they can compete against Europe's strongest teams.
