Francesco Farioli has once again proved in his coaching career how effective his playing system is. The type of football he played during his time at Ajax is the same system he is now implementing at FC Porto. After reaching the top with Ajax in the 2024-2025 season, he now aims to make FC Porto champion in Portugal as well.
Farioli made FC Porto champion in his first year in charge, and now he aims to achieve success in the Champions League as well. At this time his team has to play an important match against PSV, which can prove to be challenging for them. "I won't make any changes to my strategy against PSV. It doesn't matter who the opponent is, we always want to play the same way," he said at the press conference.
Farioli ensured that his team had structure and a strong defence. He implemented a similar system in Ajax also. His first year at FC Porto saw the team concede just 18 goals and keep clean sheets in 21 matches.
Farioli's strategy involves motivating his players to play as a team. He has kept his former player Pablo Rosario in an important role, who plays as a defensive midfielder. This has given the team stronger defensive stability. “It is very important for us to attack from the flanks, because it helps us create chances,” Farioli said.
Farioli is now worried that his team has conceded 5 goals in its first two matches in the Champions League. He said, "I wanted our team to remain without any goals in the Champions League. But some players are coming back, who will make us stronger."
Now it remains to be seen what kind of performance his team gives in the match against PSV, and whether they are able to regain their defensive stability. Farioli has instructed his players to play as aggressively as possible against PSV so as not to give them time and space.
What will happen next
FC Porto have a crucial Champions League match against PSV, which could decide the direction of their season. If they are successful in this match, it will not only strengthen their Champions League position but will also boost the team's confidence. Farioli's strategy and the collectivity of the players can play a decisive role in this match.
