Virgil van Dijk has provided a strong foundation for the team since joining Liverpool in 2017. He has been one of the main reasons for Liverpool's success over the past few years, winning two Premier League titles. However, now that he is 35 years old and his contract with Liverpool is entering the final year, the club should start thinking about life after Van Dijk.

At the moment, Liverpool have two excellent young centre-backs, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovani Leoni. If Ifeanyi Ndukwe can maintain his pre-season form in La Liga, Liverpool could have another superstar. But even though these young players have the potential to be better in the future, experienced players are needed to guide the young players.

Therefore, now Liverpool are looking for a new experienced centre-back. The club are planning to refocus on Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni in next summer's transfer window, according to reports. Bastoni, 27, has long been on Liverpool's radar, but the club have been unable to lure him away from his boyhood club. Now, amid concerns over Van Dijk's long-term future, Liverpool consider Bastoni a "perfect option" to strengthen their defensive line.

Bastoni's abilities are highly regarded not only in Liverpool but also in global football. If Van Dijk's contract is not renewed, Bastoni could be the ideal choice to replace him. Although it will not be easy to pry Bastoni away from Inter Milan, if he wants to test his abilities outside of Serie A and dream of winning the Champions League, then Liverpool could be the best place for him.

Several clubs tried to sign Bastoni in the summer, but no deal reached the final stage. Bastoni has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Serie A over the past few years and has also gained a wealth of experience, which could be helpful in guiding the younger players.

Having all this skill will help Liverpool in their search for their next Van Dijk, especially as they look to lose their captain. At the moment, it is difficult to say what will happen in the future, but it is clear that Liverpool have begun to formulate their strategies.

What will happen next

Liverpool are now focusing on Bastoni, who could be a 'perfect option' for them. If Van Dijk's future remains uncertain, the club will need to actively work to sign Bastoni in next summer's transfer window. Additionally, young centre-backs such as Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni will also get the opportunity to develop.
