Liverpool suffered a heavy defeat, Manchester City defeated 3-0

Background

Liverpool have recently invested heavily in Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola, but the performances of both players have been disappointing. Wirtz has lost his form over the past year, while Barcola has yet to find his first goal. If these players do not perform as per their potential, Liverpool may have difficulty progressing in the English Premier League.

Why it matters

This defeat of Liverpool has further weakened their position in the English Premier League. The absence of key players has raised questions over the team's quality and goal-scoring ability, which could impact their performance in the upcoming matches. Andoni Iraola will now have to change his strategy so that he can get the team out of this difficulty.

Key Points

• Liverpool suffered a heavy defeat, Manchester City defeated 3-0.
• Liverpool suffered a heavy defeat against Manchester City, with key players of the team injured. This performance raised questions about the contribution ability of expensive players.
• 'Need much more' - Release-clause bargain outshining Liverpool's £240m superstar signings.

Liverpool suffered a 3-0 defeat against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday. The match was very tight and equal for the first 60 minutes, but then Ryan Gravenburch's second yellow card changed the course of the game. City then took control of the game and goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Ryan Cherki led their team to victory.

Liverpool coach Andoni Iraola is saddened by the defeat in his first match. During this period, the team's situation became worse because many of their important players were injured. Dominik Zbosli, Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak were unavailable in the match, leaving Iraola lacking quality and goalscoring ability. Lewis Koumas tried his best, but he could not show the goalscoring ability like Isak and Gakpo.

Iraola, however, has another concern. Liverpool have spent big money on Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola, but both have disappointed with their performances so far. Wirtz was bought from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 for £116 million, but he has not been in form in over a year. At the same time, Barcola was brought from Paris Saint-Germain for 123 million pounds, but he has not been able to make any significant impact at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Victor Munoz showed some positivity in Liverpool's attack. The Spaniard played with all his heart, fighting against adversity and taking part in every match. His attitude is admirable and he is quickly becoming a key part of Iraola's plans. Munoz, who was brought in from Osasuna for £34 million, was not considered a key player for Liverpool. When all players are fit, Liverpool's attacking line will include Wirtz, Isak and Barcola, who are worth more than £400million. However, these expensive players have not impressed so far.

On the other hand, Munoz's performance could serve as an inspiration for other Liverpool players. The Athletic's James Pearce wrote, "Munoz is very good but Liverpool need more from Wirtz and Barcola." Liverpool need to improve their situation keeping in mind the lessons learned from this match.

What will happen next

Liverpool will now have to wait for the return of their injured players, especially Dominic Zbosli and Cody Gakpo. His presence in the next matches could improve Liverpool's performance in the English Premier League. Furthermore, Iraola will have to expect better performances from Wirtz and Barcola to improve the team's standing.
