Nottingham Forest are in the final stages of talks to sign Chelsea striker Liam Delap. This information has already been reported by The Athletic, which states that Delap is high on Forest's list of forward targets. Talks are progressing and Forest are in a position to sign the 23-year-old, who has been training away from the Chelsea first team.
The London club prefer a permanent deal for Delap, who was not involved in tonight's 3-2 win against Fulham. Chelsea have set a price tag of around £50 million ($68.19 million) for the striker. Chelsea had spent £30 million ($40.8 million) to sign Delap from Ipswich a year earlier, and his first season at Stamford Bridge was filled with injuries and disappointments. He scored only one goal in 12 starts and 16 substitute appearances in the Premier League.
Forest coach Oliver Glasner hopes to sign a striker and a wing-back before the transfer deadline. "We have selected our targets and players. I am more confident today than on Saturday that we will acquire these two players before the end of the transfer window," he said.
Delap has a five-year contract with Chelsea, which he signed when he joined from Ipswich in June 2025. The Athletic reported in June that Chelsea were ready to sell one of their strikers and Delap was also one of the possible names to leave.
Delap scored 12 goals in 37 league appearances for Ipswich in the 2024–25 season and was shortlisted for the Premier League Young Player of the Year award. He has played for England at all age groups, including under-21 level. Delap is the type of striker Oliver Glasner wants to see at Nottingham Forest.
Glasner considered Jean-Philippe Mteta to be an important player during his time at Crystal Palace, with his physical presence and work rate as well as his ability to draw past defenders. Delap is also packed with similar features, plus a few more. He is capable of running fast and has the energy and tenacity to put pressure on opposing defenders.
Forest also have great confidence in experienced forward Chris Wood, while Igor Jesus has scored five goals in pre-season. But Delap, who Forest already have an interest in, would be another important addition. Forest have already signed defender Ousmane Diomande from Sporting CP for £35million and have also added free agent Javer Schlager to strengthen their midfield options.
What will happen next
Talks between Chelsea and Nottingham Forest continue to progress, and a transfer for Delap looks increasingly likely. If the deal is successful, Forest hope to sign a striker and a wing-back before the end of the transfer window, adding to the strength of their squad.
