Curt Hurd is leading Dominica's national team, 4,000 miles away in Dundee, Scotland. Hird, 34, is the only Scottish manager currently managing an international men's team. After being appointed permanently in August, Hurd's job is completely different from that of Steve Clark or his successor. Herd is not just Dominica's manager, but he is also an analyst, scout, nutritionist and yoga instructor for the team, as he is the only full-time employee for the team, including players.
"The last few weeks have been really stormy, but it's been wonderful for me as a coach to be able to test myself," Herd told BBC Scotland. "It's been the hardest but greatest three or four weeks of my career."
At 34, Heard has already achieved a lot. The former Dundee United academy coach has worked in Sweden, Australia, Malaysia and Kyrgyzstan. He has also had the chance to meet Arsene Wenger and other big football figures and now aims to improve the world's 182nd best team, which is made up of mostly amateur players. Dominica has a population of around 65,000 and most players play in their domestic league, which Herd considers equivalent to Scotland's League 2. While other Caribbean countries such as Haiti and Curaçao have used a lot of foreign players to help them reach the World Cup, Dominica is allowed only six foreign players. After the rule change in January, the Herd will be able to begin recruiting at least those players whose grandparents

Adi is from Dominica.
Former St Mirren and Livingston goalkeeper Shamal George, now at Bromley, is one player Heard has been able to identify with through social media. “I spend two or three hours on Instagram and just look at players' profiles to see if anyone has a little Dominica flag in their bio page,” Hurd says. "I'm constantly on the phone. Whether it's scrolling social media – and this is not for fun – it's because I'm looking at players' profiles and databases. I have people doing it for me. I have people in the US, Canada, Europe, the UK, whose job it is to contact clubs, agents and players and tell me, yes coach, we have one. And those people have been invaluable to me."
Recruitment is not the only tool Heard is implementing to increase Dominica's competitiveness. The team is now practicing yoga and other mindfulness techniques, while Heard is always on hand to advise the group about diet and sleep. He makes it a point to go for a run every morning and never drink beer at night so he can set professional standards in his adopted community. “It's really hard – it's constant,” he admits. "I'm doing everything right now. I'm a full-time staff member, so everything falls on my responsibility. Everyone else has work. I have an assistant coach, but he's a school teacher. Even now that we're in camp, he's still working.
He said, "This is where I feel the need to take control of the situation."

Because we are in a cycle of change. And I have to run it. "I have to show people why we're doing it and how we're doing it."
Herd has been in Dominica for the past two years, having previously worked with youth teams and as a talent coach with FIFA. He said he has "fallen in love" with the country and its people, who now consider him one of their own. Life is good on a beautiful Caribbean island, but Heard admits that being "obsessed" with football prevents him from always fully enjoying the luxuries that come with it. This motivation has always been there in his career, ever since he left Scotland without a job and moved to Australia and coached a team there, Magic FC. The journey took him to the bustling metropolis of Kuala Lumpur, where he worked with the Asian branch of Spanish club Villareal, and into the high mountains of Kyrgyzstan, where goats once caused a training session to be halted for four hours. At times, it has been difficult. It hasn't been easy to miss family events and important moments. However, the experience of working in different football cultures has been beneficial. This includes playing five-a-side against former Portuguese striker Nuno Gomes at a FIFA event in Paraguay and almost playing against Arsene Wenger in Zurich.
"We're given first teams and I think, 'Oh my God, I'm in Arsene Wenger's team.' I took a photo of it, sent it back home. Incredible. We get dressed up, go out on the field and get ready to warm up

And it rains a little. And I'm looking at Arsene. I see, where did Arsene go? So we went into the restaurant and Arsene was just sitting there with a bottle of red wine. He says, 'No man, rain, it's not for me. When I was in London, I saw a lot.'
Hurd doesn't know where his coaching journey will go next, but his ambition is to eventually reach the highest level in the club game. Dundonians have already shown a willingness to adapt and learn – and are ready to take on bigger challenges. “I want it on a daily basis,” he says. "I need that pressure. I want that day-to-day grind." For now, he will have to return to many of his roles with Dominica seeking promotion to the Nations League.

What will happen next

Curt Herd's goal is to prepare the Dominica team for a better performance in the CONCACAF Nations League. In the upcoming matches, they will implement their strategies to maximize the potential of the players. Herd's experience and diverse roles can provide strength to the team, allowing them to improve their rankings.
