Background

Gerrard's chances of returning to Rangers may be influenced by the experience of his former assistant Michael Beale, who took over as manager of the club after Gerrard. This situation could be an important lesson for Gerrard, as he has already seen how the presence of a former manager can put pressure on the current manager.

Why it matters

Stevens Gerrard's talk of a possible return to Rangers reflects his popularity with the club as his former captain. Gerrard's name is indelible in the club's history after leading Rangers to their 55th Scottish League title in 2021. However, he has stressed the need to maintain respect for Derrick McInnes, allowing for stability under the club's current management.

Key points

• Steven Gerrard Hints Returning At Rangers: Should Derek McInnes Be Worried?.

Steven Gerrard has not completely ruled out the possibility of returning to manage Rangers, but has made it clear that current manager Derrick McInnes must be given full respect. Former Rangers captain Gerrard is still very popular among Rangers supporters, especially after he led the club to a historic 55th Scottish League title in 2021.

However, Gerrard's recent statements suggest that he does not want to create unnecessary pressure around McInnes, especially with the current manager continuing in his role. Speaking on Open Goal, Gerrard explained why he has avoided attending matches at Ibrox recently. He believes that returning to public view while holding another manager's position could lead to unnecessary speculation about the club's management situation.

"I've been reluctant to come up and sit in the box in a suit for some time because I don't want to disrespect any current managers," he said. His comments are especially important given what happened with Michael Beal in 2022. Biel was previously Gerrard's assistant coach and later replaced Giovani Van Bronkhorst in November 2022. His appearance at Ibrox faced criticism at a time when pressure was mounting on the Dutch manager. Gerrard clearly does not want a repeat of this situation.

Gerrard praised McInnes, stating that his former Aberdeen team was one of the toughest adversaries for his Rangers coaching staff. He said, "I have nothing but respect for Derrick McInnes. He was a tough challenge for us when he was at Aberdeen. I hope he does well." The 55-year-old title-winning manager recently made an appearance during Rangers' 3-0 win.

Gerrard confirmed that he is currently enjoying his TV contracts and enjoys spending more time with his family. He has received contact from several clubs, but no one has convinced him to return to the dugout. Rangers should welcome Gerrard's comments but McInnes must remain a priority, especially as the title race continues. Gerrard's achievements are undoubted, especially their unbeaten Premiership campaign in 2020-21. However, the constant discussion about his possible return may create unnecessary focus for the current manager. McInnes deserves the chance to establish his identity at Ibrox. His results, recruitment decisions and ability to win trophies should determine his future, not comparisons with the former manager. Gerard's "Who knows?" The answer maintains fans' interest, but more attention should be paid to their activities. He has deliberately avoided throwing shade over McInnes, and Rangers must respect that decision.

What will happen next

Following Gerrard's recent statements, it will be interesting to see whether Derrick McInnes will remain stable in his role or there will be a change in Rangers management. Gerrard has made it clear that he does not want to push for any current manager, indicating that he is not ready to return to managing Rangers for now. In this situation, Rangers fans and other club supporters will keep an eye on Gerrard's possible return.
